tutoring vulnerable youth in Eastleigh slum

The project focuses on tutoring vulnerable youth in  neighborhood of Easteligh and Mathare slum. The motivation for the project came from Abdiaziz’s experience as a youth in having no suitable place to study in his home, because of lack of space and conducive enviroment in some part  in Mathare. And easleigh.

As part of  this project,  we were lent a room by agood samaritan who was the shop owner.  The room was divided into two, one was used  as class room while the other was a shop in Eastleigh to carry out the tutoring activities and enlists the help and support of youth group in that area and community . The objectives of the  project are to provide the children with mentoring and guide them to a life of purpose, improve the academic performance of the children from the slums  and not only in tutoring but also in extra-currillum activities like sports, drama, music, culture, organising leisure and recreational activities, art, and promote HIV/AIDS  and DRUGS awareness amongst the youth and the community.

The  project initially started at Eastleigh. sec one area melawa street,  but hope to open  other tutoring programs in different areas in the slum. T hough we have experienced tutors, we lack funds to manage the project. To fund the project at the outset  we each gave whatever amount of little money per month to pay rent and the three volunteer teachers. The project is set in such a way that we don’t spend too much but with the little input we can afford to sustain the project. With enough funding we are planning to get study reference books for the children and at least offer them prizes when we can to motivate them in their academic performance.” Tutoring is held on weekdays after school until 8.30pm and during the weekends 4-6pm.the program is divided into two groups;-[class four-class six] and [class seven-class eight]

TARGET  GROUP
ü  The refugee community
ü  Local vulnerable children such as the destitute, underprivelleged and the unfortunate

2011 Update

The tutoring project has made an impact to the community members in that they now appreciate that their children are being supported through their studies and schoolwork which may eventually turn out to good grades and bright future. A positive outcome of  project is that in 2011  8 of the children who benefited from the program sat for their KCPE and 5 of proceeded on to secondary school scoring good marks in their exams . That is a good measure of the success of the program. The school also has a juniour cricket team recognized by the Minstry of Youth and Sports as a career academy.
This year without funds, the program was not re-open because of lack of marterials like desk s and enough room. so far we are looking for well wishers to funds us continue  with the program.

ACHIEVEMENTS
1.      Having more than thirty pupils as a class
2.      F ive out of eight candidates passed their KCPE exams
3.      About fifteen children realized their talents in cricket
4.      Brought the community together through a successfully organized community clean-up exercice

Challenges
Ø  Lack of table and benches
